Two widely used awning cords — including the most common generic HMPE rope — were each tested five times for breaking strength per ISO 2307:2019. The difference between the strongest and weakest cord: 142%.
Very little data exists on rope used in everyday applications. Maritime standards are well established, but what about the cord in your sun screen awning? Virtually nothing is publicly available.
Manufacturers do provide a value, but this is rarely backed by regular testing to ISO standards.
Installers and end users often rely on the product name alone. But "HMPE" on a label or product page says nothing about fibre quality.
There are significant differences between fibre types, cord construction — in particular the core — and the amount of material used in that core.
Over 100 different ropes have been tested to date, covering more than 500 individual rope samples. This time, the focus was the 3 mm cord widely used for repairing patio awnings.
Repairing such an awning is a substantial job — the main cost is labour, not the cord itself. That makes choosing the strongest, longest-lasting rope the logical choice.

Two cords were tested: a 3 mm HMPE rope with a white polyester sheath and a blue marker strand — the best-selling cord for awning applications — and a 3 mm Prorope cord with a twisted Dyneema SK78 core and a white polyester sheath.

How the awning cord is tested

Tests are carried out on a universal testing machine with a capacity of 50 kN.
Specialist rope clamps are used to conduct the breaking strength tests, allowing rope to be tested without knotting or splicing.
All tests are carried out in accordance with ISO 2307:2019 — 5 measurements per cord, eliminating the possibility of outlier results. Tests were conducted in July 2026.
Test Results
Neither cord broke completely in a single failure — only the core broke at the stated breaking strengths, after which the polyester sheath carried the residual load.
The generic HMPE rope had an average breaking strength of 218 kg / 2.13 kN, with a lowest recorded value of 2.07 kN and a residual strength of 1.48–1.66 kN. Elongation was approximately 4%.
The Prorope Dyneema SK78 cord achieved an average of 526 kg / 5.16 kN, with a lowest recorded value of 4.74 kN and a residual strength of 1.74–2.15 kN. Elongation was less than 1%.
Why the Difference Is So Large
The core was examined in both cases: both used a twisted core construction, but the SK78 variant had a significantly thicker core — meaning considerably more Dyneema was present than HMPE in the core of the other cord.
To be transparent: because the SK78 core is physically thicker and contains more material, this test alone does not allow a pure comparison of individual fibre strength. What it does demonstrate is that the Prorope construction simply uses more material, and material of higher quality.
Comparison & Price
The best-selling HMPE cord costs up to €3 per metre from various suppliers. It is available on 25-metre reels for €1.20 per metre; a 200-metre reel costs €149.95 — approximately €0.75 per metre, which is particularly relevant for installers.
The Dyneema SK78 with sheath costs €1.95 per metre cut to length, or €1 per metre on a 100-metre reel. For a 20-metre repair, the HMPE comes to €24 and the Dyneema to €39 — approximately 60% more.
Given that an awning repair is a substantial job, investing that extra €15 in the stronger, longer-lasting cord is the recommended approach.
Which Cord Is Right for Which Application?
In addition to breaking strength, elongation plays a role: SK78 is known for very low elongation (less than 1%), compared to approximately 4% for generic HMPE. For a motor with fixed end points, minimal elongation is preferable.
✓ Choose Dyneema SK78 when
- Repair is labour-intensive — the price premium is justified against the cost of having to repair again.
- Motor with fixed end points — minimal elongation prevents length drift over time.
✕ Choose generic HMPE when
- Price is the deciding factor — and the repair is straightforward to repeat.
- Short service life is acceptable — for example in temporary or seasonal applications.
Conclusion
The tests reveal a substantial difference between two cords of similar material and identical diameter. The SK78 cord is twice as strong, but also 60% more expensive — not the cheapest option, but the recommended one given the labour cost of an awning repair.
Ensure the cord you purchase matches the original diameter specified: cord diameters from 2.5 mm up to 4.2 mm are used in patio awning applications.
