Why choose Prorope polypropylene rope?
The look of manila without the drawbacks of natural fibre. It is synthetic, so it does not go mouldy or rot, and in our UV durability test it did not discolour, while real manila developed black spots.
Polypropylene rope in three colours
The same 3-strand twisted rope with the same breaking strength. Pick the colour that suits your job.
What will you use the polypropylene rope for?
Choose your application. See why polypropylene works there, which diameter fits and when another rope is the smarter choice.
Polypropylene rope as a garden fence
32 mm is one of our best-selling diameters for hanging between garden posts. You get the look of thick ship rope, but it is synthetic: it does not go mouldy or rot like natural rope.
- In our UV durability test the beige polypropylene did not discolour; real manila developed black spots from moisture
- UV-stabilised for long-term outdoor use
- Order by the metre, up to 40 mm thick
- In beige, black or orange
Our advice: 24 to 40 mm for a fence between posts; 32 mm is the most popular. Measure the length along the posts and add a little extra per post for the sag and the fixing.
Want the real feel of natural rope? Choose manila. Prefer the look of hemp but synthetic? Take a look at Spleitex, which did not discolour in the same test either.
Polypropylene rope for barriers and marking
Work site, event, campsite or temporary safety zone: a rope marks off an area quickly and clearly. Polypropylene is light, so you can lay out long lengths in no time and clear them away just as fast.
- Orange stands out straight away
- Hard-wearing: you don't need to handle it with care
- Good value in 220-metre coils for long barriers
Our advice: 10 to 16 mm for a barrier that stands out and is comfortable to handle, 6 to 8 mm for light marking.
Need a barrier along a path or at an event that looks smart? Choose beige or black in 24 mm or thicker.
Polypropylene rope for pulling cables through ducts
Installers and contractors use it to pull cables through underground pipes and ducts. The smooth surface, tensile strength and low weight make long duct runs easy.
- Smooth, so it runs easily through the duct
- Light, even over hundreds of metres
- Orange stays visible in pits and trenches
Our advice: 6 to 10 mm. If you often work on long runs, a 220 or 600-metre reel is the best value.
Most professionals choose the orange rope for this job because it stands out more. It is also available on 220 and 600-metre reels.
Polypropylene rope for lashing, covers and farming
Securing tarpaulins, bundling bales, tying things down in the barn or on site: polypropylene is the all-rounder with a low price per metre. It can take a knock and stands up to wind and weather.
- Low price, especially per coil
- Hard-wearing and light
- Black is UV-stabilised and discreet
Our advice: 8 to 12 mm for tarpaulins, bales and light lashing. 14 to 18 mm if you want a thick rope with a firm grip.
Breaking strength is not a working load. To secure a load for road transport, use certified ratchet straps.
Which diameter of polypropylene rope suits you?
Choose a diameter. You will see the breaking strength, the weight, the price per metre and what you save with a coil or reel.

Tested in-house for breaking strength
We test our polypropylene rope on our tensile test bench. 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm all came out above the specified breaking strength.
Tested after years of use
A 10-year-old 8 mm rope still reached 1,010 kg. A less well stored black rope of the same age came in at 814 kg: storage makes a difference.
UV durability test in the field
32 mm polypropylene lies outdoors in all weathers next to manila and Spleitex. We post new photos every quarter.
Polypropylene rope, Spleitex or manila?
For garden, decoration and outdoor work, these are the most popular ropes. Here is how they differ.
| Rope | Material and look | Outdoors | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polypropylene ropeThis page | Synthetic, 3-strand twisted beige, orange or black |
No discolouring in our UV test, floats | From €0,45/m | Garden, barriers, lashing and general outdoor work |
| Spleitex | Synthetic, hemp look | No discolouring in our UV test | From €0.70/m | Garden and decoration with a natural look |
| Manila rope | Natural fibre, real rope feel | Developed black spots from moisture in the UV test | From €0.35/m | Anyone who wants genuine natural rope, indoors and out |
| Polypropylene multifilament (PPMF) | Synthetic, supple multifilament | Floats | From €0.60/m | Mooring lines and fender lines |
The UV test is still running; status as of the update of 4 July 2026. Starting prices per metre as shown on the product pages.
Get the most out of your polypropylene rope
Polypropylene melts, so a lighter or heat gun gives you a neat end that will not fray. Or wrap it with tape.
Do not let the rope rub over another rope or a rough edge under tension. Heat melts the fibres.
Every knot weakens the rope. Bear that in mind when the rope really has to hold a load.
A well-stored 10-year-old rope tested at 1,010 kg, a less well stored one at 814 kg.
Do not use polypropylene rope for climbing, belaying or lifting people. That is what climbing rope is for.
If the rope becomes stiff, fuzzy or thinner at a wear point, replace it wherever it has to hold a load.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is polypropylene rope?
From 300 kg (4 mm) to 20,500 kg (40 mm) as specified. In our own tensile tests, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm did better, for example 1,651 kg at 10 mm against a specified 1,560 kg. Breaking strength is not a working load.
Is polypropylene rope suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. It is UV-stabilised, synthetic and floats. In our UV durability test the beige polypropylene has not discoloured so far, and a 10-year-old 8 mm rope still tested at 1,010 kg.
Which diameter should I choose for a garden fence?
24 to 40 mm, depending on the distance between your posts and the look you want. 32 mm is the most popular size. Add a little extra length per post for the sag and the fixing.
Should I order by the metre or by the coil?
The quantity in your cart is the number of metres; shorter lengths come in one piece. A coil or reel is often about half the price per metre. The diameter guide above shows how much for each size. From 24 mm, a 220-metre coil is available on request.
What is the difference between beige, orange and black?
It is the same 3-strand twisted polypropylene rope with the same breaking strength. Only the colour differs, and the available diameters, packs and prices may vary slightly by colour.
Found your diameter?
Order by the metre from €0,45, or choose a coil and pay about half per metre.
