HMPE endurance test - update - notable coating result after 4 weeks - Breaking Strength Test

Otto Tromm |

On exactly 5 May, the endurance test that is set to run for 5 years was started. That said — after 4 weeks, it was impossible not to go and take a look.

The test concerns breaking strength after prolonged outdoor exposure — from 6 months up to 5 years.
The details can be found here

Back to today, 30 May 2026.

This is what the HMPE looks like now:

Noticeably lighter in colour than 4 weeks ago:

It is still too early in this test to assess the effect on breaking strength, but it is clear that the effect on the coating is significant.

The breaking strength test in 5 months' time will therefore be very interesting.

Also of interest is a comparison of the different coatings. What happens to Dyneema SK75 with a gold coating? And to the T70 with a silver coating?

That will be investigated in a new test, comparing the effect of UV light — in the form of 24-hour outdoor exposure — on those 3 different ropes.

Once the test data and information are available, the link will be posted here.
