Which Dyneema rope do you need?

Choose your application. You'll see which rope fits, which diameter we recommend and what it costs.

Dyneema SK75 winch rope of 10 mm with winch hook

Dyneema rope for your winch

A synthetic winch rope is much lighter than steel cable, doesn't kink and has no broken wires to cut your hands. Order it ready-made with a hook, or by the metre.

  • Dyneema SK75 winch rope with hook: 6 to 16 mm, 10 to 40 metres
  • By the metre: Dyneema SK75 (gold) or Prorope HMPE (blue)
  • Maximum 4% elongation at break: your pulling force goes into the load

Advice: choose a breaking strength of at least 2× your winch's pulling force. For most 4x4 winches that means 10 mm. Always follow your winch manufacturer's instructions.

Dyneema can also recoil when it breaks, though with far less energy than steel. Use a winch damper and stay out of the line of pull.

0.8 mm Dyneema cord with black polyester cover for pleated blinds

Dyneema cord for pleated and venetian blinds

For pleated blinds, venetian blinds and pleated insect screen doors you want a cord that is thin and doesn't stretch, so your blind stays at the right height. Our 0.8 and 0.9 mm cords have a Dyneema core with a polyester cover.

  • Tested on our tensile bench: 0.8 mm 52 kg, 0.9 mm 58 kg
  • Hardly any stretch, so the cord stays taut
  • By the metre, or on a 1,000-metre reel for professionals

Advice: for most pleated blinds and pleated screen doors, 0.8 mm is the right diameter. A screen door opens and closes often; choose Dyneema there rather than polyester cord.

Blind cords must be kept out of reach of children. Keep loops short and use a cord tensioner or cleat.

3 mm Dyneema SK78 cord with polyester cover

Dyneema cord for awnings and shade sails

Awnings, screens, conservatories and shade sails are under tension for years. What matters most is that the cord doesn't slowly stretch. That's why we recommend Dyneema SK78 with a polyester cover here.

  • SK78 creeps less than SK75: under constant tension the cord stretches less
  • Polyester cover protects the Dyneema core
  • Tested on our tensile bench: 3 mm 526 kg, 6 mm 1,262 kg

Advice: use the same diameter as your current cord, so it fits the guides and pulleys of your awning.

Reel of manure scraper rope in a cow barn

Dyneema and HMPE as manure scraper rope

Manure and ammonia eat away at steel cable: it rusts, frays and snaps, often at the worst moment. Dyneema and HMPE don't rust, don't rot and never need greasing.

  • Resistant to manure, ammonia and most cleaning agents
  • Light and supple, so you can replace it quickly without cutting your hands
  • By the metre in one piece, or on a 100, 125 or 200-metre reel

Advice: 10 mm is the standard, 12 mm for heavier installations. Check your scraper's manual for the right diameter. Length: 2× the length of the alley, plus a reserve.

Liros XTR Racer 10 mm sheet with Dyneema core and cover

Dyneema lines for sailing and water sports

On board you want lines that don't give when the wind picks up. A Dyneema core keeps your sail under tension; a cover gives grip in winches and clutches.

  • Liros XTR Racer: Dyneema SK78 core with aramid/polyester cover, 10 and 12 mm
  • Dyneema SK75 without cover for loops, soft shackles and lashing
  • Uncovered rope floats and absorbs virtually no water

Advice: does the line run through a winch or clutch, like a sheet or halyard? Choose a covered line. For loops and soft shackles, use rope without a cover.

28 mm towing rope with covered eyes at both ends

Towing ropes for trucks, tractors and recovery

For heavy towing jobs: ropes from 18 to 36 mm with a polyester-covered eye at both ends. Light enough to handle and carry by hand.

  • Breaking strength from 27 tonnes (18 mm) to 100 tonnes (36 mm)
  • 5 metres as standard, other lengths on request
  • Equally strong wet or dry

Advice: choose a breaking strength of at least 2 to 3 times the weight of the vehicle you are towing.

This is a towing rope, not a stretchy recovery rope: it barely stretches and doesn't absorb shocks. Pull gently, without a run-up. Need a rope that stretches? See our kinetic towing ropes.

Dyneema rope by diameter: breaking strength and price

Choose a diameter. You'll see what it suits, with the breaking strength and price per metre of Dyneema SK75 and Prorope HMPE. Two good options: you choose.

Choose your diameter

Winches up to approx. 5,200 kg pulling force, most 4x4 winches, and the standard for manure scrapers.

Breaking strength of new rope, without knots or splices. Breaking strength is not a working load. Winch advice based on 2× the pulling force; always follow your winch manufacturer's instructions. Both ropes are also available on reels: choose the length on the product page. Need thinner rope? Prorope HMPE also comes in 4 mm (tested: 1,827 kg).

Dyneema rope tested in our own lab

Otto Tromm tests rope on our tensile bench in Beringe, using a protocol based on ISO 2307:2019. Here's what we learned, in plain language.

A knot costs almost half

3 mm HMPE lost 55% of its strength with a knot, 5 mm HMPE 48%. Use a spliced eye or a ready-made hook.

Bedding in makes it stronger

After pre-tensioning, 5 mm HMPE held 15% more. Put a new winch rope under tension first, without full load.

An intact cover tells you nothing

In 5 out of 5 tests on covered rope, the core broke while the cover stayed intact. In doubt about an old rope? Replace it.

A coating doesn't add strength

1.5 mm with coating reached 249 kg, without coating 256 kg. So don't choose a coating for breaking strength.

Dyneema rope or steel cable?

Dyneema replaces steel cable where weight, rust and handling matter. Not everywhere: watch out for heat and sharp edges.

Frequently asked questions about Dyneema rope

What is the difference between Dyneema and HMPE?

Dyneema is Avient's brand name for UHMWPE fibre, also called HMPE. Here you'll find Dyneema SK75 (gold) and SK78 (covered cord), and Prorope HMPE (blue). All are strong, light and low-stretch. Both are a good choice; which one you take is up to you.

Which diameter of Dyneema rope do I need for my winch?

Rule of thumb: the breaking strength is at least 2× your winch's pulling force. That gives 8 mm up to approx. 3,000 kg, 10 mm up to approx. 5,200 kg and 12 mm up to approx. 6,700 kg pulling force. Always follow your winch manufacturer's instructions.

How much does Dyneema rope cost per metre?

Covered Dyneema cord starts at €0,50 per metre (0.8 mm). Dyneema SK75 costs €2,35 per metre in 6 mm and €7,00 in 10 mm. Prorope HMPE starts at €0,99 per metre in 4 mm. You order by the metre in one piece, or by the reel.

How much strength does a knot cost in Dyneema?

On our tensile bench, 3 mm HMPE lost 55% and 5 mm HMPE 48% with a knot. Depending on the knot it can be more. So use a spliced eye or a ready-made hook.

How hot can Dyneema rope get?

For continuous use up to about 70 °C. The melting point is 144–152 °C. Take care with winches whose brake heats the drum, and with rope rubbing over a fixed point.

Can I order Dyneema rope with an eye or hook?

Yes. The Dyneema SK75 winch rope with hook and the winch extension line with stainless steel eyes can be ordered directly. For other custom work, such as a spliced eye at a specific length, request a quote.
