The 3 mm HMPE with black polyester sheath broke at an average of 4.03 kN (410 kg) — but with a spread of 1.20 kN between the lowest and highest measurement, that average is a starting point, not a guarantee.

The assumption is understandable: a rope with core and sheath breaks cleanly, predictably, and with little variation between measurements. The sheath protects the core, the core carries the load, and the system fails as a unit. What is 3 mm HMPE rope with black polyester sheath?

This rope combines a core of HMPE fibres (High-Modulus Polyethylene, also known as Dyneema or Spectra) with a braided black polyester sheath.

The core provides the tensile strength; the sheath offers protection against UV radiation and abrasion. The construction is a sheath with twisted core — a hybrid between a braided and a twisted rope.

HMPE as a material has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of common rope fibres, an elongation at break of less than 4%, and does not absorb water.

The polyester sheath adds UV resistance and mechanical protection without significant added weight.

How we test


Tensile strength test on 3 mm HMPE rope with black polyester sheath, carried out on a universal testing machine at 20 mm/min.

The breaking strength tests are carried out in-house by Otto Tromm on a universal testing machine with a capacity of 50 kN.

Two sets of purpose-built rope clamps are available for this machine, selected based on the diameter and material of the rope. These clamps allow rope to be tested without first being spliced.

All tests are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of ISO 2307:2019. This includes testing five times and using a test speed of 20 mm per minute.

Each rope is secured so that it is taut before the test begins. No pre-tension is applied, as elongation is not the subject of these tests.

Each test is filmed from two angles using a Sony camera on a tripod. The exact progression of the load curve is also recorded separately on video.

This allows the stress curve and break behaviour to be matched precisely against the output of the testing machine. For each of the five tests, the tester records observations in writing, noting the degree of elongation, the manner in which the rope breaks, and the intensity of the snap at the break point.

Test results: 4.03 kN average, but note the spread

The five measurements produced an average breaking strength of 4.03 kN (410 kg). The highest measurement was 4.76 kN, the lowest 3.56 kN. The spread of 1.20 kN — approximately 30% of the average — is large for a rope of 3 mm diameter. In applications where breaking strength determines a safety margin, the lowest measured value is the most relevant figure, not the average.

The break behaviour deviated from what is expected of a core-sheath construction in all five tests. From a load of approximately 3 kN, the load curve showed an erratic character. In every measurement, a second break followed spontaneously after the first, without additional input.

This suggests that the core and sheath did not fail as a unit — a relevant consideration for applications where controlled break behaviour is required. The breaking strength of 4.03 kN is therefore an average with a methodological caveat: it is not a clean single-break value.

Lowest measured value: 3.56 kN (363 kg) — this is the figure that counts in safety-critical applications.

When is this rope suitable — and when is it not?

An average breaking strength of 4.03 kN with a spread of 1.20 kN defines the application range. The polyester sheath makes this rope broadly suitable for outdoor and wet environments; the large variation between measurements calls for caution in safety-critical use.

Suitable for

  • Marine and watersports — HMPE floats, does not absorb water, and retains full strength when wet; suitable as a halyard, lashing line or mooring line under low dynamic load.
  • Lashings and securing (non-critical) — for securing tarpaulins, equipment or light loads where a safety factor of at least 5:1 on the lowest measured value (3.56 kN) is achievable.
  • UV-exposed outdoor applications — the black polyester sheath provides adequate UV protection for prolonged outdoor use, unlike unsheathed HMPE.
  • Weight-critical applications — HMPE has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of common synthetic fibres; 3 mm delivers more than 400 kg at minimal mass.

Not suitable for

  • Life safety applications — the 30% spread and the atypical two-stage break behaviour make this rope unsuitable for climbing, working at height, or personal fall protection.
  • Prolonged static load at elevated temperature — HMPE exhibits creep above 60°C; not suitable for permanent lashings in warm environments.
  • Shock loading — with less than 4% elongation at break, this rope absorbs virtually no energy; dynamic shock loads are transmitted directly to the attachment points.
  • Applications requiring predictable break behaviour — the two-stage break behaviour observed in all five tests makes this rope unreliable where a controlled single break is expected.

Conclusion: strong for 3 mm, but use the lowest value as the basis for design

The 3 mm HMPE with black polyester sheath achieves an average breaking strength of 4.03 kN (410 kg) — well above comparable nylon braided rope of the same diameter (2.90 kN).

The combination of HMPE core and polyester sheath makes this rope suitable for wet, UV-exposed environments such as marine and outdoor rigging. The large spread of 1.20 kN and the atypical two-stage break behaviour are factors that must be taken seriously.

When sizing for an application, use the lowest measured value of 3.56 kN, apply a safety factor appropriate to the application, and do not use this rope in situations where human safety depends on the breaking strength.
