Why spleitex?
Spleitex looks like real hemp rope, but it is made from spun polypropylene. You get the warm, natural look without the drawbacks of natural fibre.
What will you use spleitex for?
Pick your application. You will see why spleitex works there, which diameter fits and when something else is the better choice.
Spleitex for garden barriers and post rope
A rope between posts hangs in wind and weather for years. Natural hemp turns grey there, grows mould and eventually rots through. Spleitex keeps its colour and shape, and looks the same after the rain.
- Rot-proof and absorbs almost no water
- UV-stabilised, so less fading in the sun
- Natural look that suits wood, gravel and greenery
Advice: 16 to 24 mm for a light barrier or path edging, 28 to 36 mm if the rope really needs to stand out, for example along a driveway or jetty.
Allow some extra length per span for sag and fixing. A 220 metre coil is much cheaper for large barriers.
Spleitex as a stair rail
A rope handrail gives your staircase instant character. Spleitex gives you the look of hemp, without the fluffing and dust that natural rope produces over time.
- Soft and pleasant in the hand
- Fluffs and sheds far less than natural rope
- Also suitable for outdoor stairs or a damp cellar
Advice: choose 28 to 36 mm for a rail that sits well in the hand. Measure the stair along the wall and add a little for finishing both ends.
Spleitex on board and on the jetty
On classic ships, launches and traditional boats you want rope that looks like it used to. Spleitex has that traditional look but handles water: it floats, does not rot and splices easily.
- Guard rail rope, decorative lines and fender lines
- Jetties, gangways and post rope by the water
- Easy to splice for a neat eye or end finish
Advice: spleitex is a sturdy rope, but not an extremely strong one. For heavily loaded lines such as mooring lines, choose PPMF or polyester.
Spleitex for scouting, decor and crafts
Thin spleitex is ideal for lashings, set building and crafts. It looks handmade, knots and splices well, and can be packed away wet after camp without going mouldy.
- Lashings and pioneering for scouts
- Theatre, events, trade fairs and shop windows
- Macramé, craft projects and home decor
Advice: 6 or 8 mm for lashings and crafts, 10 to 12 mm for decor that needs to be visible from a distance.
Spleitex or natural rope?
Four ropes with a natural look side by side. Prices per metre at 12 mm.
| Rope | Look & feel | Outdoors | Price 12 mm | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SpleitexThis page | Like hemp, soft, hardly fluffs | Rot-proof, UV-stabilised, floats | €2.00/m | A natural look that lasts for years outdoors |
| Natural hemp | Real natural fibre, soft | Can go mouldy and rot when damp | €3.00/m | Indoors, when it has to be truly natural |
| Manila | Natural fibre, rougher, lots of grip | More weather-resistant than hemp, but still a natural fibre | €1.55/m | Natural rope for outdoors with plenty of grip |
| Manila-coloured polypropylene | Synthetic, beige, smoother than natural rope | Rot-proof | €0.95/m | Budget barriers where looks matter less |
Which spleitex diameter do you need?
Pick a diameter. You will see the breaking strength, the price per metre and what it is suitable for.
Choose your diameter
- Breaking strength (stated)
- 7,600 kg
- Price per metre
- €9.50
Better value per reel or coil
Breaking strength is not a working load. Stated values come from the manufacturer; where we tested ourselves, our own result is shown too. Do not use for lifting, belaying or carrying people.
Tested in-house, published honestly
In our tensile test, 6 mm spleitex broke at 435 kg on average and 8 mm at 689 kg. That is lower than the manufacturer's figure, and we would rather tell you up front.
Ready-made climbing rope
Looking for a synthetic hemp climbing rope? We make it to length with a spliced eye and a finished end, ready to hang.
Prefer real natural rope?
For indoors, or when the rope must be biodegradable, choose natural hemp or manila.
Make your spleitex last longer
Heat-seal the ends, add a whipping or finish them with a splice. Otherwise the strands come apart.
Twisted rope kinks if you pull it off the side of a coil. Unroll it and it stays nice and straight.
Metal corners and rough posts wear the rope. A smooth fixing point or bracket prevents this.
Spleitex can handle water. Rinse off dirt and sand with water and, if needed, a little mild soap.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is spleitex?
Spleitex is a three-strand twisted rope made from spun polypropylene. The spun fibres make it look very much like natural hemp, which is why it is also called synthetic hemp. It combines that natural look with the advantages of a synthetic.
Is spleitex suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. It does not rot, absorbs almost no water, is UV-stabilised and usable from –30 °C to +100 °C. That makes it a popular choice for garden barriers, post rope and use by the water.
How strong is spleitex?
The manufacturer's figures range from 510 kg at 6 mm to 12,000 kg at 36 mm. In our own test, 6 mm broke at 435 kg on average and 8 mm at 689 kg. Spleitex is intended for decorative and light work, not for lifting, belaying or people.
Can I use spleitex as a climbing or swing rope?
We do not recommend loose rope off the reel for that: the fixing and finish determine safety. If you want a climbing rope with the look of hemp, choose our ready-made synthetic hemp climbing rope.
How do I order the right length?
The quantity in your cart is the number of metres, and you receive them in one piece. If you need a lot, a reel or a 220 metre coil is cheaper. Rope cut to length is excluded from the right of withdrawal.
