Manila-Seil

(8 produkte)

Manila rope is natural rope made from abaca fibre (Musa textilis) from the Philippines: 3-strand twisted, light brown and firm in the hand. It is the strongest natural fibre for rope, stronger than sisal and hemp.

At Prorope you can buy manila from 4 to 48 mm, per metre in one piece or on a coil. Choose your diameter below. Will the rope hang outside in the rain? Then first read manila outdoors or indoors.

Breaking strength: 4 mm was measured in our own tensile test; the other diameters are indicative values for new, dry rope without knots or splices. Breaking strength is not a working load: manila rope is not meant for hanging from, swinging on or lifting anything.

Stair handrail: 36 mm is a nominal size. Natural rope can turn out thicker in practice, up to around 42 mm. Measure the opening of your handrail brackets before you order.

Manila rope in four versions

Manila rope outdoors or indoors?

Manila is a natural fibre. Indoors and in dry places it lasts for years. Outdoors in the rain it works, but it changes: you can see that in our own outdoor test.

Outdoor test: spleitex, real manila and manila-coloured synthetic rope of 32 mm side by side in the grass
Start of the outdoor test with 32 mm rope: spleitex (top), real manila (middle) and manila-coloured synthetic rope (bottom).
The same three ropes after a rainy period; the manila rope has black spots
Update July 2026: manila got black spots from moisture; the synthetic rope and spleitex did not discolour.
  • Indoors and dry: stair handrails, interiors, decoration, hospitality. This is where the natural look comes into its own.
  • Outdoors: possible, certainly for barriers and decoration; our manila is treated against rot. After a rainy period, our 32 mm manila in the outdoor test got black spots on the underside. Rope that stays wet for a long time will eventually rot.
  • Getting wet: manila shrinks the first time it gets wet: it becomes shorter and slightly thicker. Allow some extra length outdoors and don't tension it tightly between posts on a dry day.
  • Water: manila is heavier than water, so it does not float. Rinse it after contact with salt water and let it dry.

Advice: want the look of manila, but the rope hangs outside all year or lies in wet grass? Then choose manila-coloured synthetic rope (polypropylene). In the same outdoor test it did not discolour, it does not rot and it is cheaper per metre.

When should you not choose manila rope?

  • You want to hang, swing or climb on itThen you need rope made for that purpose, such as our synthetic hemp climbing rope. Manila frays quickly when climbed on, see the field test.
  • The rope has to hold a lot of forceManila is too weak and too variable for that. Choose HMPE rope: 4 mm Prorope HMPE reached 1,827 kg in our test, 4 mm manila 152 kg. If you really want to lift loads, use certified lifting equipment and feel free to ask us for advice.
  • The rope stays wet all yearChoose manila-coloured synthetic rope: the same look, but it does not rot.
  • It has to floatManila sinks. Polypropylene floats; see our polypropylene rope.

Manila rope, tested by us

We test rope ourselves on our own tensile tester and outdoors. These are the manila results we have published so far.

152 kg for 4 mm

Average breaking strength of 4 mm manila over 6 tensile tests (1.49 kN).

Wide spread

The weakest test broke at 1.20 kN, the strongest at 1.93 kN. Natural fibre is never completely uniform.

Breaks strand by strand

In none of the tests did the rope break all at once: first one or two strands went, then the rest.

Discolours outdoors

In our outdoor test with 32 mm, manila got black spots from moisture; manila-coloured synthetic rope and spleitex did not.

6 mm manila rope in a tub of fresh water at the start of the water test

New: water test started on 23 October 2026

How long does manila last when it lies in water? Since 23 October 2026, 6 mm manila rope (Grade 2) has been lying in fresh water and in salt water. We measure the breaking strength after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months and publish the results in the rope test database.

Frayed 38 mm manila climbing rope after about a year of use in a CrossFit box

Field test: manila as a climbing rope

In an active CrossFit box, a 38 mm manila climbing rope was badly frayed after about a year. That is why we recommend synthetic hemp for climbing ropes.

Frequently asked questions about manila rope

Can manila rope stay outdoors?

Yes, for barriers and decoration manila works fine outdoors, but it changes. Rain can discolour it, and rope that stays wet for a long time will eventually rot. So let it dry out. If the rope hangs in the rain all year or lies in wet grass, choose manila-coloured synthetic rope.

Does manila rope shrink when it gets wet?

Yes. The first time manila gets wet, it becomes shorter and slightly thicker. So don't tension it tightly between posts on a dry day, and allow some extra length.

Which diameter of manila rope do I need for a stair handrail?

Most stair handrails are made with 36 mm manila. That is a nominal size: natural rope can turn out thicker, up to around 42 mm. Measure the opening of your handrail brackets before you order. You order per metre in one piece.

Can you hang from or swing on manila rope?

No. Manila rope per metre is not a climbing, swing or lifting rope. Natural fibre varies in strength from piece to piece and can weaken on the inside without you seeing it. For climbing there is our climbing rope; if in doubt, contact us.

What is the difference between Grade 1 and Grade 2 manila?

Grade 1 and Grade 2 are quality classes for manila rope, Grade 1 being the higher class. All our manila is Grade 2, including the stair railing rope. If you want Grade 1, please send us a quote request.

Will I receive the rope in one piece?

Yes. If you order per metre, you receive the chosen length in one piece: 9 metres in your basket is one rope of 9 metres. A coil is one continuous length.
