Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE / HMPE)
UHMWPE / HMPE rope is a powerful innovation in industries where strength and durability are critical. This rope is known for its exceptional performance, combining high strength, low weight and excellent resistance to wear and abrasion.
Three core benefits
-
High strength — 15× stronger than steel at the same weight
-
Low weight — Floats on water and is easy to handle
-
Durable — Excellent resistance to UV, chemicals and abrasion

Key properties of HMPE rope
High strength
HMPE ropes have impressive tensile strength. They are at least eight times stronger than standard steel wire ropes of the same weight. This high strength makes it possible to use thinner and lighter ropes without compromising load-bearing capacity.
Low weight
Despite the high strength of HMPE ropes, they are remarkably light. They can weigh just a fraction of steel wire ropes, making them easier to handle, transport and install. This reduced weight comes at no cost to performance — the ropes retain their structural integrity under heavy load.
Wear and abrasion resistance
The ropes show excellent abrasion resistance, allowing them to withstand harsh conditions and rough surfaces without rapid degradation. Their abrasion resistance extends rope service life and reduces the need for frequent replacement. HMPE ropes are up to 15 times more wear-resistant than carbon steel.
Chemical resistance
HMPE ropes have a molecular structure that allows them to resist a wide range of chemicals, including detergents, mineral acids and oils. This chemical resistance ensures that rope performance stays consistent, even when exposed to aggressive substances.
Low stretch
With minimal elongation under load, HMPE ropes hold their length and shape even when subjected to high tension. This property is important in applications where precision and stability are required, such as mooring and hoisting operations.
Buoyancy
The density of UHMWPE rope is lower than that of water, which lets the rope float. This property is particularly beneficial in marine applications, where floating ropes improve safety and ease of use.
Frequently asked questions about HMPE rope
-
HMPE stands for High Modulus Polyethylene, also known as UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). It's a synthetic fibre with extremely long molecular chains, all aligned in the same direction — this is exactly why HMPE is so incredibly strong for its weight. Dyneema is a well-known brand name based on the same UHMWPE fibre, produced by DSM.

Prorope offers four HMPE/UHMWPE products:
- Prorope HMPE rope — our own 12-strand braided HMPE rope, available from 4 mm to 16 mm
- HMPE rope with polyester cover — core-and-cover rope for better handling and abrasion resistance, from 2 mm to 5 mm
- HMPE/UHMWPE cord 5 mm navy/gold — a special colour variant, ultra-strong and direct from stock
- UHMWPE rope with polyester cover 3 mm — compact and lightweight core-and-cover rope
All ropes are sold per metre and available direct from stock.

We tested our own 4 mm Prorope HMPE rope (article number T-20182) in our own laboratory in March 2026. Averaged over 5 tests, the breaking strength came out at 17.926 kN — the equivalent of more than 1,827 kg. That's exceptionally high for a rope only 4 mm in diameter.
For comparison: a 4 mm core-and-cover HMPE rope from another supplier averaged 5.586–6.698 kN in our tests. The 12-strand braided construction of our own brand delivers significantly higher breaking strengths.
-
This 5 mm cord has been extensively tested (December 2025). Without a knot, the average breaking strength came out at 9.266 kN (~945 kg) over 5 tests. With pre-tensioning this rose to 10.642 kN (~1,085 kg).
With a knot, the breaking strength dropped to an average of 4.834 kN (~493 kg) — a loss of around 48%. This confirms once again: always use a splice or softshackle instead of a knot.
-
We have measured this on multiple HMPE variants. On the 3 mm core-and-cover rope (black cover), the breaking strength dropped from an average of 4.188 kN without a knot to 1.880 kN with a knot — a loss of around 55%.
On the 5 mm navy/gold cord, a knot caused around 48% loss of breaking strength. Always prefer a spliced loop (splicing costs only around 10% of breaking strength) or a certified softshackle.

Our own tests reveal an important safety point: on core-and-cover HMPE rope, the core can break while the polyester cover remains fully intact. This means a broken rope can look completely undamaged from the outside.
If you aren't sure whether a core-and-cover rope has been heavily loaded or dropped, don't use it again without inspection. This is a known characteristic of all core-and-cover constructions.
-
Yes. The specific gravity of HMPE is 0.97 g/cm³ — slightly lower than water. That makes HMPE rope one of the few high-performance ropes that naturally floats. This makes it especially suitable for marine applications, watersports and situations where a floating rope improves safety.
-
HMPE rope has very low stretch at break: typically 2–4%. This is significantly less than polyester (~10–15%) or nylon (~25–35%). Thanks to this minimal stretch, the rope holds its position under load, which is essential for winching, hoisting and precision applications.
Note: for recovery situations where shock absorption is desirable, a kinetic rope with more stretch is the better choice.
-
Yes. HMPE is naturally well-resistant to UV radiation. On the page we list this as 100% UV-resistant. On the core-and-cover variants, the polyester cover provides extra protection for the core. Prorope only sells HMPE ropes with good UV resistance — no compromise on quality.
-
Yes. HMPE has excellent chemical resistance: it withstands detergents, mineral acids and oils. Saltwater has no adverse effect on breaking strength or service life, which makes HMPE ideal for marine and offshore applications.
-
The Prorope HMPE rope (4–16 mm) is a 12-strand braided rope without a cover: maximum breaking strength, slightly stiffer in character, ideal for winching, hoisting and heavy-duty applications.
The HMPE rope with polyester cover (2–5 mm) has an HMPE core with a polyester outer cover. This makes it more supple, easier to knot and more resistant to abrasion. The covered variant is ideal when handling and core protection matter more than absolute maximum strength.

Yes. All our HMPE rope is sold per metre, with no minimum order quantity. Orders placed before 13:00 ship the same day.
