Sisal rope · natural fibre
Sisal rope on 220 metre reels
3-strand twisted rope made from 100% agave fibre (Agave sisalana). Its coarse, grippy texture makes sisal the standard for cat scratching posts, garden work, tying and decoration. At Prorope available exclusively by the full 220 metre reel — straight from our own stock.

Material & construction
Agave fibre, tightly twisted
Sisal is harvested from the leaves of the Agave sisalana. The long, hard fibres are spun into yarns and then laid into a 3-strand twisted rope. The result: a stiff, dimensionally stable rope with the characteristic straw-yellow colour and coarse grip that no synthetic fibre fully replicates.
Three yarn bundles in a classic Z-lay. The lay keeps the rope compact and allows it to be wrapped tightly.
No oil, coating or impregnation. Important for applications involving animals and for anyone who wants a pure natural product.
Colour and fibre structure can vary slightly from reel to reel — that comes with an unprocessed plant fibre.
In our own test lab in Beringe we pull ropes on a 50 kN tensile bench in accordance with ISO 2307:2019 — multiple tensile tests, without knots, using bollard fixtures. That is how we know exactly what our natural fibres can take.
Applications
What sisal rope is used for
The classic use. Sisal is scratch resistant, safe without any treatment and wraps tightly around a post — including when re-covering an existing scratching post.
Stiff twine that supports plants without cutting into them and can simply go on the compost heap at the end of the season.
The warm straw-yellow colour and coarse texture make sisal a favourite in rustic and botanical interiors.
Coarse knotwork with character: sisal holds every knot tight and gives projects a rugged, natural look.
Strong enough for everyday tying and bundling in the workshop, the shop or on the farm.
Untreated sisal is safe play and climbing material for pets.
Tip — for outdoor and wet work
Staying outdoors? Choose polypropylene
Sisal is not rot resistant and belongs indoors or under cover. If the rope has to stay outside permanently or will get wet, choose twisted polypropylene: the same classic look, but unaffected by moisture and with a measured breaking strength of 3.63 kN (±370 kg) at Ø 4 mm in our own test lab.

Comparison
Sisal vs hemp vs manila vs jute
Four natural fibres with a similar look — but clearly different properties. Hemp, manila and jute have already been tested on our own 50 kN tensile bench in accordance with ISO 2307:2019.
| Property | Sisal | Hemp | Manila | Jute |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre | Agave sisalana (leaf) | Cannabis sativa (bast) | Abacá / Musa textilis | Corchorus (bast) |
| Texture | Stiff, coarse, grippy | Coarse, slightly hairy | Coarse, sturdy | Soft, slightly woolly |
| Measured breaking strength Ø 4 mm* | Not yet tested in our lab | 1.57 kN ≈ 160 kg | 1.48 kN ≈ 151 kg | 1.01 kN ≈ 103 kg (twisted) |
| Smell | Neutral, slightly grassy | Distinctly earthy | Distinctly sweet | Slightly earthy |
| Rot resistant | No — store dry | No — store dry | Slightly better than sisal | No — weakest outdoors |
| Cat scratching post | Excellent — the standard | Possible, but softer | Possible, coarser | Unsuitable — too soft |
| Sold at Prorope | Per 220 m reel | Per metre, reel or coil | Per metre or reel | Per metre or reel |
| Best for | Scratching posts, garden, tying, decor | Interiors, scouting, decor | Handrails, classic work | Decoration and light tying |
Conclusion: our own measurements (ISO 2307:2019, without knots) show how close the natural fibres are: at Ø 4 mm braided hemp reaches 1.57 kN (±160 kg), manila 1.48 kN (±151 kg) and twisted jute 1.01 kN (±103 kg). Sisal is next on the testing schedule. Choose sisal for its scratch-resistant grip and sharp reel price — not as a lifting rope: for loaded applications we recommend a tested synthetic fibre.
Format
Sold exclusively by the 220 metre reel
We deliberately supply sisal rope only by the full factory reel of 220 metres. That keeps the winding intact, avoids cutting waste and gives you the sharpest possible price per metre. One reel is more than enough to wrap several scratching posts or to cover a whole season of tying in the garden.
Full factory reel, uncut and tightly wound. Available from stock in several diameters.

Technical data
Technical specifications
We have not yet tested sisal on our own tensile bench, and natural fibres also lose considerable strength at knots — up to around 50% in the ropes we have measured. Never use sisal for lifting, climbing or securing loads.
Sisal absorbs moisture and can rot or develop mould. Keep the reel indoors and let rope that has become wet dry out completely.
Colour nuance, smell and fibre structure differ per harvest and per reel. That is not a defect, but inherent to unprocessed agave fibre.
