Which coloured cord suits your project?

Choose what you will use the cord for. You will see which size works best, and when something else is the better choice.

A handful of coloured cord in different colours and sizes

Coloured cord for crafts, DIY and macramé

Coloured cord is supple, easy to knot and keeps its colour. That makes it popular for bracelets, key rings, decorative knots and macramé, at home and at school.

  • Wide choice of colours per size, so combining is easy
  • Light and supple, comfortable in the hand when tying lots of knots
  • 100 m reels, enough for a whole class

Our advice: 2 mm for bracelets, key rings and fine braiding. 3 or 4 mm for macramé and decorative knots. For a thick, eye-catching line, choose 6 mm.

Want to try colours first? The mystery box contains 10 types of coloured cord, 5 metres each, for €11.95.

Order:
Reel of orange 8 mm coloured cord for cordoning off and marking

Marking, cordoning off and colour coding

A bright colour stands out from a distance. Use coloured cord to cordon off an area at an event, campsite or building site, or to mark materials, bundles and locations by colour in storage and logistics.

  • In our test, 8 mm broke at 868 kg on average
  • Every reel is one continuous 100 m length
  • Give each zone or product its own colour

Our advice: 6 or 8 mm for cordoning off: easy to see and comfortable to handle. 2 to 4 mm for colour coding bundles or labels. If the line will hang in the sun for months, choose white or black polyester rope.

Order:
Reel of beige 4 mm coloured cord for packing and bundling

Packing and bundling

For tying up parcels, bundling sticks, cables or plants and holding light goods together. The cord gives a little, so you can pull a bundle nice and tight.

  • Light and economical per metre on a reel
  • Colour shows at a glance which bundle belongs to which customer or location
  • 2 mm also comes on a 500 m reel (selected colours) for €42

Our advice: 3 or 4 mm for most parcels and bundles. 6 mm for heavier bundles. Do not use it for lifting or as a permanent connection under load.

Order:
Neon green 4 mm paracord for guy lines and camping

Camping and outdoors: fine for short use, choose something else for the long term

For a camping weekend, a washing line at the campsite or a barrier for a few days, coloured cord works fine. But polypropylene has the lowest resistance to sunlight of all common rope fibres. If the cord stays outside for weeks, its strength drops noticeably.

  • Coloured cord: good for short-term outdoor use
  • 4 mm paracord (nylon): absorbs shocks, ideal as a guy line for tents and tarps
  • Braided polyester: better resistance to sunlight and hardly stretches

Our advice: for guy lines and anything that stays outside for a long time, choose coloured 4 mm paracord or white or black polyester rope.

Black twisted PPMF rope for mooring lines and fender lines

Boat and water: it floats, but it is not a mooring line

Coloured cord floats and does not absorb water. Handy for light lines on board, marking gear or a floating line for swimming or fishing. It is not made for mooring your boat.

  • Floats, so your line does not disappear under water
  • Dries quickly and does not get heavy when wet
  • Bright colours are easy to spot on the water

Our advice: for mooring lines and fender lines, choose twisted PPMF rope, 6 to 18 mm. It is also PPMF, but made to absorb shocks and easy to splice.

Which size of coloured cord do you need?

Choose a size. You will see the breaking strength from our own test, the price and what it is best for.

Choose your size

Each size is a separate product with its own colours and lengths. If you pick a different size from the one on this page, the button takes you to the right page.

Breaking strength is not a working load. A knot costs braided cord about a third of its strength. Do not use for lifting, climbing or belaying.

Coloured cord or a different rope?

Coloured cord is made for colour, ease of use and price. If it has to stay outside for a long time or really hold something, one of these is a better fit.

Good to know

A knot weakens the cord

In our knot test, 4 mm coloured cord held 233 kg without a knot and 152 kg with one knot. With a knot in it, count on about two thirds of the breaking strength.

Seal the ends

Briefly melt the end with a lighter so it does not fray. Polypropylene melts at around 160 °C, so only hold the flame to the cord for a moment.

Outdoors in the sun

A few days or weeks is no problem. If the cord hangs in the sun for months, its strength drops noticeably. Choose polyester or nylon instead.

Not for safety use

Do not use coloured cord for lifting, climbing, belaying or suspending anything above people. It is not tested or intended for that.

Frequently asked questions about coloured cord

How strong is coloured cord?

On our own tensile tester, 3 mm broke at 70 kg on average, 4 mm at about 233 kg, 6 mm at 489 kg and 8 mm at 868 kg. For 2 mm we state about 70 kg. Breaking strength is not a working load: knots, wear and sunlight all make the cord weaker. See all tests.

Which size is best for macramé?

For most macramé projects, choose 3 or 4 mm. For fine work such as bracelets and key rings, 2 mm is nicer to work with; for a large wall hanging with a thick, striking line, choose 6 mm.

Can I use coloured cord outdoors?

Yes, for short-term use such as a camping weekend or a barrier for a few days. Over time, polypropylene loses noticeable strength in the sun. For anything that stays outside for months, choose polyester rope or paracord.

Can I order by the metre?

Coloured cord is sold on 100 m reels; 2 mm is also available on a 500 m reel in selected colours. Each reel is one continuous length. Want to try colours first? Take the mystery box with 10 × 5 metres.

Do you need large quantities or a special colour?
