Description
Description
Polyester rope is a 16-carrier braided synthetic rope, available in white and black, in diameters from 1.5 to 12 mm. Polyester is one of the most durable and weather-resistant rope types: it's strong, UV-resistant, has minimal stretch and retains its strength in wet conditions. That makes it a go-to choice for applications where dimensional stability and a tight line matter.
The 8 mm variant is widely used for stretch tents, where a firm and stable rope is essential. All diameters are available per metre or on reels (100, 250 or 500 metres), available directly from stock.
Break strength per diameter
The values below are indicative for new, dry and knot-free polyester rope. A knot significantly reduces break strength.
Diameter Break strength Note
1.5 mm 40 kg
3 mm 150 kg
4 mm 405 kg Prorope measurement (see test block)
5 mm 410 kg
6 mm 575 kg
8 mm 1,037 kg Prorope measurement (see test block)
10 mm 1,540 kg
12 mm 2,160 kg
Note: the 8 mm value reflects the break strength actually measured by Prorope. All values are indicative and may vary in practice. We will be testing the full polyester range shortly.

Why choose braided polyester rope?
Polyester stays taut, stands up to sun and rain and feels supple in the hand. White or black, from 1.5 to 12 mm, from just €0.55 per metre.
What will you use the polyester rope for?
Choose your application. See why polyester works there, which diameter fits, and when another rope is the better choice.
Polyester rope for stretch tents and guy lines
A stretch tent stands or falls with taut lines. If your rope stretches after a rain shower, the fabric starts flapping and you have to re-tension. Polyester barely stretches and keeps its strength when wet. That's why 8 mm polyester is a go-to choice for stretch tents.
- 8 mm reached 1,037 kg in our own tensile test
- Stays taut, even after rain
- White blends in with light fabric, black with dark fabric
- Supple, so it feeds easily through eyelets and tensioners
Our advice: 8 mm for the tension lines of a stretch tent. For guy lines on ordinary tents and party tents, 5 or 6 mm is enough.
If your tent manufacturer specifies a diameter or breaking strength, stick to it. A knot costs strength, so allow a generous margin.
Polyester rope as flagpole halyard
A flagpole halyard hangs outside all year in sun, rain and wind. Cotton and cheap cord weather and go slack. Polyester resists UV and barely stretches, so your flag stays neatly at the top.
- Highly resistant to UV and weather
- Minimal stretch: the flag doesn't sag
- Smooth enough for the pulley in the pole top
- Sold by the metre, so exactly twice the pole height plus a little extra
Our advice: choose the diameter that fits the groove of your pulley, usually 4 or 5 mm. Not sure? Measure your old line. White is the classic choice for a white pole.
Working out the length: pole height × 2, plus 1 to 2 metres for knots.
Polyester rope for barriers and events
For a course, a car park or a trade fair stand, you want a line that looks taut and tidy and can be used again after the weekend. Polyester doesn't sag like stretchy rope, and in white or black it looks calm and professional.
- White and black, to suit any event
- Sags less than nylon or cheap polypropylene
- Hard-wearing and reusable
- Better value on a reel for long lengths
Our advice: 8 mm is clearly visible and strong enough for most barriers. Should it look thicker, for example between posts, choose 10 or 12 mm.
Need hundreds of metres? A 100 metre reel saves 20 to 35% compared with the price per metre.
Polyester rope for parasols and sunshades
Polyester is the right material for a parasol: little stretch and good sun resistance. But for a large parasol or a hospitality parasol we don't recommend this rope. Choose our 8 mm parasol cord with core. The core makes the rope round and firm, so it runs smoothly over the pulley, and it also comes in beige.
- Parasol cord: 997 kg in our own tensile test
- Beige, white or black, to match canopy and pole
- Round shape thanks to the core, so it runs smoothly over the pulley
Our advice: large parasol or a pulley in the pole? Choose the 8 mm parasol cord, from €1.45 per metre. For a shade sail or screen you only tie down, this braided polyester in 6 or 8 mm does the job.
Polyester rope on board
Polyester is the material for sailing rope: little stretch, strong when wet and resistant to sun and salt. For lines you handle a lot, such as sheets, this smooth rope gives you less grip. Choose a proper sheet line there. This braided rope is fine for lashing lines, a flag halyard and small jobs on board.
- Sheets: spun polyester sheet line, with core and more grip
- Mooring: ready-made polyester mooring lines with stainless steel thimble
- Note: polyester sinks. If your line needs to float, choose PPMF
Our advice: for sheets and halyards the spun polyester sheet line, for mooring the polyester mooring lines. This rope for lashing and the flag halyard.

Better value on a reel
Breaking strength is not a working load: new, dry rope without a knot. 4 and 8 mm were measured by us, the other values are supplier specifications.

Tested for breaking strength in-house
We test our rope ourselves on the tensile tester. For this polyester rope we have measured 4 mm (405 kg) and 8 mm (1,037 kg); the other diameters will follow soon. All results are in our rope test database.
Need thicker polyester?
Thicker than 12 mm, or do you prefer a classic look? Choose our 3-strand twisted polyester rope in 12 to 20 mm, in white and black.
Heavy pulling?
For winches and pulling with a lot of force, polyester isn't the best choice. HMPE is many times stronger per diameter and stretches no more than 4%.
How to work with polyester rope
Polyester is a synthetic. Cut the rope and briefly melt the end with a lighter or hot knife, so it doesn't fray.
The breaking strengths apply to rope without a knot. With a knot, breaking strength is considerably lower, so allow a generous margin.
If the rope runs over a pulley, choose a diameter that fits the groove. Too thick and it jams, too thin and it jumps out.
This rope is not intended for climbing, belaying or lifting people. Use certified equipment for that.
Frequently asked questions
Which polyester rope diameter do I need for a stretch tent?
8 mm is widely used for stretch tents. In our own tensile test it reached 1,037 kg without a knot. If your tent manufacturer specifies something else, follow their advice.
Is there a difference between white and black polyester rope?
It's the same braided polyester rope; you choose the colour that stands out least or fits best. The price differs by a few cents per diameter. Note: 1.5 mm is only available in white, on a 500 metre reel.
Does polyester rope float?
No, polyester is heavier than water and sinks. If you want a line that floats, choose PPMF or polypropylene.
How do I order the right length?
The quantity in your basket is the number of metres. By the metre we supply up to 200 metres in one piece. On a reel you get 100, 250 or 500 metres as one continuous length, and up to over 30% cheaper than by the metre.
Is polyester better than nylon or polypropylene?
For lines that need to stay taut and hang outdoors for a long time, yes: polyester stretches less and handles UV better. Nylon, on the other hand, stretches a lot and absorbs shocks. Polypropylene is cheaper and lighter, but stretches more and wears faster.
