Decorative & light cord

Coloured cord

Light, colourfast and endlessly versatile

Coloured cord is a soft, colourfast cord made of PPMF (polypropylene multifilament). It is light, floats on water and is easy to knot and braid — which makes it popular for macramé, decoration, crafts and light outdoor use.

The colour runs through the entire PPMF fibre (solution-dyed), so it does not flake or peel. Available in more than 20 colours, from black and white to navy, orange, pink and olive green — per metre and on reel, directly from our own stock.

Colour choice 20+ coloursSolution-dyed PPMF fibre, from black and white to navy, orange, pink and olive green. Does not flake or peel.
Specific gravity 0.91 g/cm³Lighter than water — the cord floats. One of the lightest cords in our range.
Elongation at break ~120%Highly elastic and shock-absorbing, but less dimensionally stable where low elongation is required.
Water absorption Virtually noneRetains its strength and weight when wet and dries quickly — unlike cotton or jute.
UV resistance StabilisedUV-stabilised fibre; colours stay beautiful longer. More sensitive to UV than polyester, however.

Our own tensile-test data

Results for exactly this product

We test our coloured cord on our own tensile tester according to ISO 2307, with five pulls per cord without knot. Three insights you won't find with any competitor.

01 Construction matters more than diameter

You would expect a hollow, flat braided cord to be weaker than a cord with core. Our measurements showed the opposite: at the same 6 mm, the flat-braided construction distributes the load better across the fibres than the sheer amount of material.

6 mm: 425 kg (spiral with core) · 489 kg (standard with core) · 591 kg (hollow, flat braided) — almost 40% difference
8 mm: 505 kg (spiral with core) vs 868 kg (core-sheath, 2 cores)
02 A knot costs you almost half

The sharp bend in a knot concentrates the load on a small point, resulting in significant strength loss. Where strength matters, use a splice or a spliced eye instead.

4 mm: 286 kg (without knot) → 169 kg (1 knot, −41%) → 147 kg (2 knots, −49%)
03 Thicker sizes break in phases — sometimes without warning

Thin, braided sizes snap suddenly: 3 mm broke in one go in all tests, with a surprisingly loud bang. Thicker core-sheath sizes behave differently and can already be internally damaged before you see it on the outside.

3 mm: in one go (3× 0.68 / 2× 0.69 kN)
8 mm: invisible internal fractures · 10 mm: neatly in three phases

Conclusion: choose coloured cord when you need colour, softness and a light, floating cord for decorative and light applications. If you need maximum strength or abrasion resistance for permanent heavy outdoor use, look at polyester rope or nylon rope.

Points of attention & storage

  • 1 Friction heat: avoid prolonged friction over sharp edges — because of the relatively low melting point, PP can soften under rapid friction.
  • 2 Heavy outdoor load: for permanent, heavy outdoor use with lots of sun, polyester is the more durable choice.
  • 3 Storage: store dry and out of direct, bright sunlight to keep colours looking their longest.
  • 4 Termination: where strength matters, use a splice or spliced eye rather than a knot.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ coloured cord

Coloured cord is soft, colourfast cord made of PPMF (polypropylene multifilament). It is light, floats on water and available in more than 20 solution-dyed colours, making it popular for decoration, crafts and light outdoor use.
From PPMF, i.e. polypropylene multifilament. The 0.8 mm variant is the exception: it is made of polyester. PP is a light synthetic fibre that does not absorb water and is resistant to oil and chemicals.
Our fibres are UV-stabilised, so the cord is perfectly suitable for outdoor use and retains its colour for a long time. Polypropylene is naturally more sensitive to UV than polyester; for permanent, heavy sun exposure, polyester is the more durable choice.
Yes. With a specific gravity of about 0.91 g/cm³, PPMF is lighter than water and the cord stays afloat.
More than 20 colours in diameters 0.8, 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm, available per metre and on reels of 50, 90, 100 or 500 metres. Unsure about a colour? Our surprise box is a fun way to try them out.
Yes. Polypropylene absorbs virtually no moisture and retains its strength when wet. It is also resistant to acids, bases and oil.
In our own tensile-tester measurements, 4 mm cord held 286 kg without a knot, 169 kg with one knot (−41%) and 147 kg with two knots (−49%). A knot concentrates the load on a small point. Where strength matters, use a splice or a spliced eye.
Because construction matters more than diameter. At 6 mm we measured 425 kg (spiral braided), 489 kg (standard with core) and even 591 kg (hollow, flat braided) — almost 40% difference at the same thickness. The braid pattern determines how well the load is distributed across the fibres.
That depends on the size. Thin, braided sizes such as 3 mm snap suddenly, in one go and with a surprisingly loud bang. Thicker core-sheath sizes (8 and 10 mm) break in phases, where the core may already be slightly damaged while nothing is visible on the outside.
PPMF fibre can stretch to over 120% before breaking, and in all our tests we also saw a lot of elongation. This makes the cord flexible and shock-absorbing, but less suitable for applications where you specifically need dimensional stability and low elongation.
