Blind cord

(8 products)

When choosing blinds cord, material, thickness, and color are key factors. Polyester is often preferred for Venetian blinds due to its strength and UV resistance, making it ideal for areas with lots of light. Nylon is strong but sensitive to UV light, which can cause quicker wear. Polypropylene is a cheaper alternative, but it’s less durable and UV-resistant, leading to faster wear and more frequent replacements. For electric blinds, a cord is needed for rolling them in and out. For larger blinds, thicker cords are required, with 1.0 to 1.3 mm for smaller blinds and 2.5 mm for larger wooden blinds.

The Complete Guide to Blinds Cord

Everything you need to know about choosing the right cord material, thickness, and type for your blinds

One thing is certain when it comes to blinds cord - one day it will wear out. Preferably, of course, you want the wear to be slow and the blind cord to last as long as possible.

So let's see what the options are and what is the best choice when you are looking for a new cord for your blinds. We'll look at material, cord thickness and color options.

Material Comparison: Nylon, Polypropylene & Polyester

Nylon

Very strong material, but has significant drawbacks for blind applications.

Very strong material
Sensitive to UV light
Degrades faster in sunlight
Not ideal for window applications

Polypropylene (PP)

Budget-friendly option, but compromises on quality and longevity.

Lower initial cost
Less strong than alternatives
Poor UV resistance
Wears out faster
Requires frequent replacement

Why UV Resistance Matters

Blinds hang exactly where there is the most light exposure. UV resistance is crucial for longevity. While polypropylene may seem cheaper initially, you'll spend more over time due to frequent replacements and the hassle of re-stringing your blinds.

Electric Blinds and Blind Cord

If you have electric blinds, you still need cord for rolling them in and out. When rolling in, the motor turns so that the blind cord is twisted on a bushing, thus rolling the blind in.

In an electric blind, there are two louver cords:

  • One that tilts the slats. It lies loose over the bush, allowing it to tilt the slats without rotating further.
  • The cord that pulls the slats up is attached to the roll-up box with a knot and is rolled in and out.

Electric Blind Advantage

With electric blinds, cord replacement is generally needed less often. The constant force and controlled run-in speed create less friction, which means less wear and tear on the cord.

Because the motor works this way, you also never see electric blinds with ladder tape. The cord that pulls the slats up is the one you'll usually need to replace.

Choosing the Right Cord Thickness

The larger the blind, the thicker the cord should be. To determine which cord you need, you can look at the blind body size.

Quick Reference

For blind bodies measuring 25 mm to 35 mm, a cord of 1.0 to 1.3 mm diameter will be sufficient. For wooden blinds with a tray of 50 mm or larger, choose a 2.5 mm diameter cord.

Cord Selection Guide by Blind Type

Blind Type Recommended Diameter
Aluminum Blinds 1.1 to 1.7 mm
Wooden Blinds 2.5 mm
Flyscreen / Mosquito Net Systems 1.1 mm

Construction of Venetian Blind Cord

Venetian blind cord is made of braided polyester with a core from 1.7 mm diameter. Below that diameter, it is hollow braided because the diameter is so small.

Polyester is one of the most hard-wearing and UV-resistant types of rope. It's available in white and black for standard applications.

0.8 mm diameter polyester is also often used as louver cord, even though it is not specifically made for that purpose. This cord is available in many colors and comes on reels of 90 meters.
