Why this 3 mm UHMWPE rope?
A white, thin and hard-wearing cord for the awning on your patio cover or veranda, at the lowest price per metre in our range of kernmantle cord. We tested it ourselves, so you know exactly what it can take.
Is this cord right for your job?
Choose what you need the cord for. We will tell you honestly whether this cord is the right choice, or whether a stronger cord is the better buy.
Awning cord for your patio cover
Is the awning on your veranda or patio cover running stiffly, is the fabric hanging crooked or has a cord snapped? Usually only the cord is worn. With new 3 mm cord your awning works again, without replacing the whole system.
- White with two blue marker threads, neat under a light-coloured roof
- The UHMWPE core absorbs almost no water, so it can stay outdoors
- The polyester sheath takes the friction over pulleys and guides
- Measured breaking strength of 218 kg, plenty for operating an awning
Advice: first measure your old cord with a calliper. If it is 3 mm, this cord is the best-value choice. Replacing several cords or doing this for customers? Take the 200 metre reel (€0.80/m).
Replace all the cords of one awning at the same time. If one cord is new and the rest are old, the fabric often pulls crooked.
Awnings, screens and shade sails
For operating an awning or tensioning a small shade sail, 3 mm UHMWPE is a good choice: thin, hard-wearing and low-stretch, so your fabric stays taut.
- Thin enough for most pulleys and eyelets
- Low stretch, so the fabric does not start to sag
- Just as strong after a rain shower, because it absorbs almost no water
Advice: fine for operating cords and small sails. Tensioning a large shade sail that catches a lot of wind? Choose Dyneema SK78 with polyester sheath: measured at 526 kg in 3 mm, more than twice as strong.
Breaking strength is not a working load. A gust of wind puts a peak load on the cord, so keep a generous margin.
Conservatory awning: measure the diameter first
Many conservatory awnings do not run on 3 mm cord but on 2.5 mm. Half a millimetre sounds small, but a cord that is too thick runs stiffly through the guides and can jam on the winding shaft.
- Measure an unloaded piece of old cord with a calliper
- If it is 3 mm, this cord fits
- If it is 2.5 mm, choose 2.5 mm HMPE with polyester cover
Advice: for 2.5 mm conservatory awnings, HMPE with polyester cover 2.5 mm is the right choice (measured 381 kg, €0.99/m). Not sure? Email a photo of your old cord next to a ruler to info@prorope.com.
Tension lines, washing lines and jobs around the house
A thin cord that can stay outside, does not go slack when wet and does not wear through quickly: useful for plenty of jobs in the garden and shed.
- Washing line or tension line that stays taut
- Guy lines for a tent, tarp or canopy
- Pull cords for hatches, flaps and pulleys
Advice: for one-off jobs the 25 metre spool is usually enough. Want the cord in stock for other projects too? The 200 metre reel is a third cheaper per metre.
Do not use it to secure people or to lift loads over people. This cord is not made for that.
Need more strength? Choose a stronger 3 mm cord
To be honest: in our test this cord broke at 218 kg. That is enough for awnings and light jobs, but lower than other 3 mm HMPE cords reached on our test bench. If real weight hangs on the cord, or a winch or hoist pulls on it, take a stronger version.
- HMPE with polyester cover 3 mm: measured 410 kg, white or black
- Dyneema SK78 with polyester sheath 3 mm: measured 526 kg
- Both available by the metre, always in one piece
Advice: for heavier tensioning and large sails, choose Dyneema SK78. Mainly looking for a black cord with much more strength? Then HMPE with polyester cover.
Thin kernmantle cord compared: which 3 mm suits you?
All breaking strengths come from our own test bench, not from the packaging. So you see straight away what you get for your money.

Tested to ISO 2307:2019, average of 5 measurements without a knot, on new cord. Breaking strength is not a safe working load. Read the test of this cord or see all results in the rope test database.
How to replace the cord on your awning
Every system is a little different, so keep your awning's manual at hand. This is the order that works for most patio covers.
- Secure the fabric
Retract the fabric, disconnect any motor from the power and secure the fabric so it cannot shoot away.
- Record the route
Take photos of how the old cord runs over the pulleys, guides and winding shaft.
- Measure diameter and length
Measure the diameter with a calliper and the length of the old cord. Add a margin for knots and adjustment.
- Pull the new cord through
Attach the new cord to the old one and pull it through the guides. That way it follows exactly the same route.
- Adjust and finish
Tension all cords evenly, test the fabric a few times and briefly melt the ends so they do not fray.
Good to know
HMPE is slippery and a knot weakens it considerably. In our knot test on 3 mm HMPE with sheath, less than half the strength remained. Tie a good knot and pull it tight.
The cord bends well, but feels a little stiffer than polyester. That comes from the UHMWPE core and says nothing about the quality.
Use a sharp knife or sharp scissors. Blunt scissors flatten the core and make the sheath fray.
Wear over a burred eyelet or a stiff pulley often determines the service life more than the breaking strength. Check them while you are at it.
Frequently asked questions about 3 mm UHMWPE cord
Is this cord strong enough for my patio cover?
For operating the awning under or on a patio cover, yes: we measured an average of 218 kg. Tensioning a large sail that catches a lot of wind, or want an extra margin? Choose Dyneema SK78 3 mm (526 kg).
Why is this cord weaker than your other 3 mm HMPE?
Every cord is built differently, and we publish what we measure, even when it disappoints. This cord reached 218 kg, very consistently over 5 measurements. Another 3 mm HMPE with sheath reached 410 kg. On the other hand, this cord is the best value per metre. Read the full test.
Can the cord stay outdoors?
Yes. The UHMWPE core absorbs almost no water and is as strong wet as dry. The polyester sheath protects the core against UV and abrasion.
Should I choose 25 metres or the 200 metre reel?
For one awning, 25 metres is usually enough; do measure the total length of your old cords. Replacing several awnings or working as an installer? With the reel you pay €0.80 per metre instead of €1.20.
Is the 200 metre reel one piece?
Yes, a full reel is one continuous length. So you cut exactly the pieces you need yourself.
Your awning as good as new
